A 77 year old made Ladies DAy history in Newcastle on Saturday by winning the annual best dressed competition
A 77 year old made Ladies Day history on Saturday by becoming the first man to win Best Dressed at the annual event. And, what makes his triumph even more impressive is the fact he designed his winning outfit himself!
The style stakes are always high at Newcastle Racecourse when it comes to Ladies Day. Arriving hot on the heels of Plate Day last month, its an occasion where not dressing to the nines just have a flutter is just plain wrong. There was an early start for many up at Gosforth Park, with gates opening at 11am and an hour of half price drinks until 12 tempting many people to arrive inj good time.
And, as well as there being extra incentive for getting down early, there was also some serious motivation for looking the part as, as soon as people started walking into the course, fashion scouts were on the look out for Ladies Day 2025’s best outfits. No area was missed out as experts cast their eyes on the fabulous fashion that was out in force on Saturday, with some amazing hats, very dapper gents and well dressed couples, before they then picked their finalists.
All the contenders were invited to strike a pose in the main show ring, as a winner was then decided. And the style champion for this year was Bruce Dickens, with him impressing judges, not only by looking very sharp, but also because the Moss Bros suit he was wearing was his own design. The chic combination of a forest green jacket and maroon trousers won the 77-year-old the title and thousands of pounds worth of prizes.
Among Bruce’s best dressed prize haul was a £1000 Dawson & Sanderson Holiday Voucher, a Seaham Hall spa stay for two including dinner, bed and breakfast with spa access, a meal at much loved restaurant Rio, a VIP booth at Jalou, an overnight Stay for two at Redworth Hall and two premier tickets for Ladies Day 2026.
Shocked to win, Bruce commented: ““I never expected to win, but I’m over the moon. I styled myself, with some help from Moss Bros, said Bruce. The prizes are incredible and I was up against some very stiff competition. Everyone looked amazing.”
Second place this year was awarded to Barbara Hessen, who stunned in a gorgeous white dress and won herself a prize package that included a Charlotte Tilbury Makeover at Harrods Beauty and an overnight stay for two at the Holiday Inn Jesmond. And Andrea Innes, who looked beautiful in a striking green dress earned herself prizes like an Eatflix Cinema voucher for two and Afternoon Tea for two at The Royal Station Hotel for coming third.
