🚨 You need to know

Alexandria will celebrate the contributions of women innovators with a special fitness and history walk this Thursday, July 3, highlighting the remarkable story of Gladys West, the mathematician whose work made GPS technology possible. The free event, organized by the National Center for Women’s Innovations and Alexandria Celebrates Women in partnership with the Alexandria America 250 Committee, will begin at 7 a.m. outside the Braddock Road Metro Station.

Participants will walk the 2.1-mile Potomac Yard Trail to Virginia Tech’s Innovation campus at Potomac Yards, where a 9 a.m. ceremony will honor West’s trailblazing contributions to the Global Positioning System. The trail, which runs north along Potomac Avenue and features exercise equipment, courts, and playgrounds, parallels Alexandria’s historic railroad passages, offering walkers the opportunity to explore the intersection of women’s history and transportation innovation.

The centerpiece of the event will be West’s traveling exhibit, which showcases the significant obstacles she overcame in her groundbreaking career. The exhibit has attracted thousands of visitors and inspired students across age groups before moving to its next destination at the University of Colorado/Denver for the upcoming academic year. The Thursday event serves as a farewell celebration for the exhibit’s time in Alexandria.

Set at a leisurely pace, the walk aims to honor the footsteps of Virginia women who have taken unprecedented steps to invent, achieve, and innovate throughout the state’s history. For those preferring not to walk, participants can also travel directly to the Virginia Tech campus event via the Braddock Road and Potomac Yards Metro stations.

Registration for the free event is available through Eventbrite.
