AAA predicts a record-breaking 72.2 million Americans will travel over the Fourth of July holiday, with 5.8 million flying.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — If you’re planning to fly this week, you’re not alone. AAA expects a record-breaking 72.2 million Americans will travel over the Fourth of July holiday, with more than 5.8 million flying to their destinations.
That marks a 1.4% increase over last year’s record and reflects the growing demand for summer getaways.
At Buffalo Niagara International Airport, officials say the travel rush is already underway — and this week is expected to be one of the busiest of the year.
“Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time,” is the top advice from airport officials. Travelers are encouraged to arrive at least two hours before their scheduled departure.
According to data from the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA), booked airline seats at Buffalo’s airport are up nearly 8% compared to last year, which translates to about 5,000 more passengers flying in and out during this holiday stretch. The airport is also seeing about a 3% increase in overall traveler volume.
Travel tips to keep in mind:
- Download your airline’s app to receive real-time updates on any delays or cancellations.
- Check in online to help speed up the process once you arrive at the airport.
- Pack smart — know TSA guidelines, and keep essential items like IDs and medications in your carry-on.
Some passengers we spoke with say the key to a smooth trip is preparation.
“We get here with enough time to chill out and get a snack,” said April Clements, who was traveling with her family. “We bring candy and treats in our bags and some toys and surprises. Hopefully, that makes it easier for our kids.”
“Better early than never,” added Owen Calaerese of Hamburg. “It’s all about staying relaxed — you’ve got to take it all in and enjoy it.”
AAA says this year’s Independence Day travel period — running from June 28 to July 6 — includes two weekends, giving travelers more flexibility. Driving remains the most popular mode of travel, with more than 61 million Americans expected to hit the road. But air travel is on the rise, too, with airport terminals across the country preparing for peak crowds.

If you’re traveling by car — experts say Wednesday, July 2 and Sunday, July 6 will be the most congested days on the road. Drivers are urged to leave early in the day to avoid afternoon backups.
Bottom line: Whether you’re flying or driving, plan ahead, pack your patience, and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going.
