The Los Alamos Local Business Coalition (“Coalition”) invites public review and input on its “Grant Funding Support” idea, a proposal aimed at boosting the economic vitality of Los Alamos County by establishing an effective grant-getting resource that brings a steady stream of funding into the community to support local businesses and organizations.. This initiative is one of six forward-thinking ideas detailed in the newly released “Coalition Idea Book,” now available as a PDF on the Coalition website.
The “Grant Funding Support Initiative” idea seeks to foster a stronger local economy by:
- Establishing a Shared Resource: This initiative proposes to bolster the sustainability and growth of Los Alamos County’s business and non-profit sectors by establishing a shared grant-writing resource.
- Providing Professional Expertise: This shared service would offer professional expertise in identifying relevant grant opportunities, crafting compelling proposals, and navigating the application process, thereby increasing the success rate of local organizations seeking external funding.
- Ensuring Cost-Effectiveness and Efficiency: A shared resource allows organizations to access high-quality grant writing support on an as-needed basis, which would otherwise be cost-prohibitive individually, freeing them to focus on their core operations and missions. It also promotes a systematic approach to grant sourcing.
- Achieving Higher Success Rates: Studies suggest that organizations with professional assistance have a significantly higher success rate, around 50%, compared to those without, around 20%.
- Creating Economic Impact: All grant dollars brought into the community represent basic economic development and contribute directly to the sustainability of the recipient organization.
“We believe that by providing our local businesses and non-profits with expert grant-writing support, we can unlock vital funding that fuels their growth and strengthens our community’s economic and social fabric,” said a spokesperson for the Coalition. “This initiative is about building a more resilient and sustainable local economy for everyone.”
The “Grant Funding Support Initiative,” idea, along with other innovative concepts like the “Storefront Recapture” and “Local Business Billboard Collective”, were generated through extensive community engagement and forums held since February 2025. These ideas are designed to address the top challenges facing the Los Alamos business environment, including affordable commercial space, complex and opaque regulatory environments, workforce shortages and housing costs, and the perceived lack of support and access to funding for local businesses.
The Coalition encourages all citizens, business owners, and community stakeholders to review the complete set of ideas presented in the “Coalition Idea Book” on our website. Your feedback and engagement on the ideas are invited as we work together to build a more prosperous Los Alamos.
