Honor has just launched its Magic V5 foldable in China, reclaiming its title as the world’s thinnest foldable, but only if you ignore its massive camera bump.
The Honor Magic V5 evolves on the prior Magic V3 with two key areas of focus, the thickness, and the camera.
Starting with the hardware, Honor Magic V5 measures in at 8.8mm, undercutting the 8.93mm Oppo Find N5 and also the 8.9mm/9mm expected thickness of Galaxy Z Fold 7. Honor details this on its website in China, but the global site doesn’t list anything yet as the launch hasn’t been announced for the rest of the world. However, the catch is that the 8.8mm profile only applies to the “Warm White” color variant. All others will be 9mm thick. That single color variant is also lighter than the rest, weighing in at 217g.
Packed inside of that thin body, Honor Magic V5 is powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite, has a 7.95-inch inner display and 6.43-inch outer display, up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, and ships with Android 15 out of the box. The battery is 6,100 mAh on the highest tier version, but 5,820 mAh on everything else – a very interesting distiction.
The other big story is the camera.
Despite its thinness, Honor Magic V5 still manages to pack a 50MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide, 64MP 3x telephoto lens, and has a pair of 20MP sensors for selfies on both the inner and outer displays. But that’s only because the camera module is huge.
As The Verge’s Dominic Preston points out, the Honor Magic V5’s camera module is thicker than either half of the phone itself. It’s way bigger than the camera bump on Oppo Find N5, or really any foldable we’ve seen to date. One can hope that the extra space for camera hardware will make the camera really good, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
