MINER, Mo. (KFVS) – Many Americans will be lighting up the sky with fireworks in celebration of the Fourth of July holiday with family and friends.
While used fireworks may look harmless, they might still have a little spark left and that’s why it’s important to properly dispose of them.
Ashley Guthrie and her brother, Shay May, at May Brother Enterprises fireworks store in Miner, Missouri, say the debris can be dangerous when disposed of incorrectly.
“Sometimes the boxes could reignite and catch fire like some of the case they can reignite [and] cause the fire to start. And if there’s a missed shot, like a shot that didn’t go off in the firework, it could actually go off.” said Shay May of May Brothe Enterprises.
They say the first thing to do is place all used fireworks in a bucket of water and allow them to soak overnight.
If you’re unsure about disposal, you can contact your local fire department for advice.
You should also never burn fireworks to dispose of them because that could also cause the unused gun power to ignite and cause the fire to get out of control.
