Louisville Pauses Entertainment District Development Over Community Concerns

The plan allowed patrons to carry open containers of alcohol Main Street from Wenzel to 10th Street, as well as a section of Fourth Street.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Plans for Louisville’s own entertainment district are now in limbo, the mayor announced Wednesday.

Mayor Craig Greenberg said the city is taking another look at a proposal for an open-alcohol recreation area after recent incidents like large crowds gathering on NuLu sidewalks, and the potential for street takeovers.

“We have pushed pause on that for right now, given some of the what we have been dealing with, we want to make sure that we have enough manpower to ensure that when we do create that, that safety is paramount and that there are enough officers in the evening,” Greenberg said.

The plan allowed patrons to carry open containers of alcohol on Main Street from Wenzel in the east end of Nulu to 10th Street, as well as the section of Fourth Street from Main to Broadway.

The Louisville Downtown Partnership, which developed the idea, didn’t comment on Greenberg’s statement but did encourage the public to make comments in an online feedback forum.

It closes July 6, and the Downtown Partnership says it will then review and evaluate the feedback. You can find that form here.
