Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democrats had a successful convention this week in Chicago. They defended their stance against attacks and emphasized being for national unity, the middle class, women, and the United States in Vice President Harris’ speech on Thursday night.

It appeared that the focus was more on their life stories, aspirations, and symbolism rather than specific policy proposals. The Democrats understood the importance of appealing to voters based on personal qualities rather than policy positions, especially in comparison to former President Donald Trump.

The Democratic convention was praised for its positive atmosphere and a message of joy. Harris conveyed a sense of unity with the electorate and highlighted her support for women and the middle class, placing an emphasis on gender issues.

Overall, the convention is expected to give a slight boost to the Harris-Walz ticket, positioning Vice President Harris with a lead over former President Trump in both national and swing state polls.

Elections are ultimately a referendum on the incumbent. We will see, in the Sept. 10 debate between the vice president and the former president, whether Harris is able to escape stigmatization over the perceived failures of the now fading current president.

Despite the successful convention, the race is expected to remain close as the Democrats’ message lacked substance on critical issues like inflation, cost of living, immigration, and crime. The Harris-Walz ticket will need to address these concerns to establish a significant contrast with former President Trump.

The outcome of the 2024 presidential election will likely be determined by a small margin of votes, similar to previous elections. Both parties will need to carefully navigate their strategies to appeal to voters and effectively critique their opponents to secure victory.
