PLATTSBURG, Mo. (KCTV) – A man who stole hundreds of dollars in fireworks from a Plattsburg business will not get to celebrate the Fourth of July with them.
Clinton County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Thursday, July 3, indicate that Steven J. N. Carroll, 25, of Plattsburg, has been charged in connection with the theft.
A probable cause statement filed by the Plattsburg Police Department revealed that just before 6:25 p.m. on Friday, June 27, law enforcement officials were called to Hartzell and Sons Construction at 1103 W. Clay Ave. with reports of a burglary.
When first responders arrived, they said they found the owner, who reported that a large box of fireworks and several smaller boxes were stolen from the building. However, a security camera caught the suspect on tape.
The footage showed a suspect, later identified as Carroll, move the camera so it could no longer capture the front of the building. As it had been raining the day of the theft, investigators said they also found muddy footprints that led them to find the door Carroll is believed to have broken in through.
Law enforcement officials noted that security footage from a nearby business captured the suspect vehicle, a gray Dodge pickup, as it entered and left the Hartzell parking lot. They found the truck at the Apple Plaza Apartments, where Carroll is known to frequent. He was taken into custody.

Investigators noted that Carroll is well known to them as he has a criminal history that includes 22 misdemeanor and 7 felony arrests. He has now been charged with burglary, property damage and stealing.
As of Thursday evening, Carroll remains behind bars with no bond allowed. A hearing has not yet been scheduled.
