Ghost of Yōtei is an upcoming action-adventure title that has garnered attention for its unique and respectful focus on the Ainu, the Indigenous people of Hokkaido, Japan. While full details remain limited, Sucker Punch Productions’ co-creative director, Nate Fox, recently offered additional insight into the development team’s cultural research efforts in Japan.
In a follow-up to his earlier PlayStation Blog post, Fox reiterated the team’s commitment to authentically portraying feudal Japan—this time with a particular emphasis on accurately representing Ainu culture and heritage.
The Ainu are an Indigenous group native to northern Japan, particularly Hokkaido, whose language, beliefs, and traditions differ significantly from those of the dominant Yamato (Wajin) population. The game draws its title from Mount Yōtei, a volcano in Hokkaido often referred to as “Ezo Fuji” (the Mt. Fuji of the North).
Although not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei shares similar thematic and aesthetic elements while grounding its narrative in the cultural identity and historical struggles of the Ainu. Set in a fictionalized 19th-century Hokkaido during the Meiji-era assimilation period, the game seeks to highlight Ainu resistance and spirituality through rich storytelling and world-building.
To ensure cultural accuracy, the developers are working closely with Ainu scholars and consultants to integrate the Ainu language (Ainu Itak), traditional garments, tattoos, rituals, and animistic spiritual beliefs, including the concept of kamuy (deities or spirits). The studio has also emphasized an ethical approach to storytelling, aiming to avoid stereotypes or cultural exploitation, a pitfall common in past portrayals of Indigenous peoples in media.
