Vicksburg: The Turning Point of the Civil War – Confederacy Surrenders on July 4, 1863

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Every day leading up to the 250th anniversary celebration of the Declaration of Independence, KNOE will bring you “This Day in History” as part of an overall “We the People” initiative.

On July 4, 1863, after 47 days of battle, Lt. General John Pemberton’s Confederate troops surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant in Vicksburg. This marked a turning point in the Civil War, and handed the Union army what President Abraham Lincoln called the key to bringing the war to a close.

Many who died in that battle are buried in the Vicksburg National Military Park.
