Essence Fest Radiates: A Weekend Celebration of Music, Culture, and Community

From first-timers to longtime fans, festival goers and vendors alike celebrate the spirit, joy, and representation at one of the year’s most anticipated events.

NEW ORLEANS — Dancing, food, freebies, and a deep celebration of Black culture means Essence Fest is back, and festival goers are soaking up every minute.

“I like to dance and there’s no shortage of DJs and vibes to get into, so I’m in heaven right now,” one attendee said, capturing the high-energy spirit of the weekend.

Beyond the music, festival goers are also walking away with plenty of swag. “I got some Disney ears from Disney, every year they give us Disney ears and I give them to my niece. Vaseline always gives a full thing of all their Vaseline products. Target gave a bunch of stuff,” another attendee shared.

But the heart of Essence Fest goes beyond the music and giveaways — it’s about community, culture, and connection.

“[I’m excited] just to see a lot of my people and just to see people having fun and doing something educational and having a good time,” one attendee said. Another added, “I think just seeing so many beautiful women, so many beautiful men. And when there’s so much going on in the world, it’s nice to be here.”

Whether it’s someone’s first time attending or they’re a long-time fan of the fest Essence Fest truly has something for everyone. And just a few hours into the weekend celebration, the crowds were already soaking up every moment. “So far, so good. I like to see the representation and things like that. We need that,” a first time festival goer said.

While attendees are enjoying their experience, vendors are enjoying the exposure.

“It’s amazing. We have only been in business for a year. Just amazing things have been happening and it really goes to show what we do is really important,” said Kanika McIntyre, owner of Melanated Princess.

McIntyre says Essence Fest is giving her new business a chance to reach a wider audience, and she’s making the most of it.

“They love it and we want more to come. It’s all about brand awareness, making sure people know about who we are, and spreading the word and purchasing to support our young ladies,” she said.

At Essence Fest, whether you’re building your brand or making memories, one thing’s for sure — a good time is guaranteed.
