Rory McIlroy feels sharper heading into the weekend at The Open
Rory McIlroy says he’s in a much better spot than six years ago at Portrush and knows full conviction is key this weekend.
The Open
Scottie Scheffler made the most of the second round and enters Day 3 of the 153rd Open Championship in the lead.
The World No. 1 and tournament favorite shot a 7-under par 64 in the second round at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland as he zoomed to the top of the leaderboard. Scheffler sits at -10 entering the third round on Saturday, July 19, one stroke better than Matt Fitzpatrick, who is -9 through two rounds.
Scheffler shot a 3-under 68 on the opening day, just one shot off the first-round lead. He grabbed a share of the lead with Fitzpatrick in the second round after a 17-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.
Two different groups are bunched behind them. Brian Harman and Haotong Li are tied at 8 under, and five others enter sit at -5 entering the third round. Hometown favorite Rory McIlroy opens Day 3 tied for 12th at -3.

After rain fell overnight, the Weather Channel is calling for cloudy skies at Royal Portrush for most of Saturday’s third round. Players with early tee times will begin under cool conditions with temperatures just above 60 degrees before the afternoon gives way to highs in the upper 60s. There’s a slim chance showers could return in the late morning, but they should clear out relatively quickly.
The 153rd edition of the Open Championship is being played at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. This marks the third time Royal Portrush has hosted the tournament following 1951 and 2019.
