The Legendary Sweater of Predators History Awaits Its Revival

There are two things you need to know about me when it comes to NHL uniforms. One, I prefer white jerseys at home, mainly because I like seeing more variety as opposed to the home team always wearing dark and the road team always wearing light.

And two, gold is the worst color to use as a ‘dark’ jersey. Unfortunately for the Nashville Predators, gold is their ‘dark’ jersey at the moment, while their white jersey with gold as the top secondary color gives us hardly any contrast. And no, the navy blue piping doesn’t do much.

That said, one of my biggest gripes is that the Predators refuse to inject more navy blue into their jersey. But, once upon a time, navy blue was THE primary color for the Preds and their uniforms were, in turn, sensational.

While I didn’t care as much for the 2007-08-2010-11 look before they rebranded and went all out in gold, the 1998-99 to 2006-07 jersey combos were more pleasing to the eye, they still focused on navy blue and added in the right amount of silver, complete with the navy blue triangle behind the sabre-toothed cat to give the jersey a well-balanced flair.

Nashville Predators need to go back to what should be their greatest jersey ever

Lately, you’ve seen so many teams revert to their ‘classic’ looks, with the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues joining the fray in 2025-26. You’ve also seen the Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, and Pittsburgh Penguins go back to what at least resembled their original looks in the last 10 years.

So, for the Predators, it’s time. Drop the gold, and at least make these uniforms somewhat easy to look at again. Because right now, the gold (yellow, really) isn’t cutting it. I get that it’s unique, but there’s a reason hardly anyone other than the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers have pulled this off.

But then again, yellow was never considered the ‘dark’ uniform for the most part, and teams wore darker colors when they played the Lakers. Maybe a similar rule would work for the Preds, enabling (or outright encouraging) teams to wear darker colors when they travel to Nashville.

Because right now, there isn’t enough color contrast. So, drop those yellow jerseys for good, bring back a variation of those original white jerseys with a dark combination to match, and become one of the league’s better-looking teams again.
