According to PGMOL chief Howard Webb, VAR should have overturned Bruno Fernandes’ red card for slipping before contact was made during Manchester United’s match against Tottenham.
As United trailed Spurs 1-0 towards the end of the first half, Fernandes slipped and caught James Maddison high on the leg, resulting in a red card shown by referee Chris Kavanagh.
United eventually lost 3-0 to Tottenham, and Webb believes VAR Peter Bankes should have intervened to change the decision.
WHAT OFFICIALS SAID:
Assistant referee: That’s a red card, 100%. On-field decision is red card.
VAR: It’s not studs, it’s shin height. The angle doesn’t show studs, so it’s a slight error. VAR should have sent the referee to the screen.
WEBB’S VERDICT: The contact was high, but Fernandes slipped first. It was not an attempt to play the ball, but a more of a tripping action. VAR should have advised the referee to review the decision.
Should Palace have been awarded a penalty vs Liverpool?
INCIDENT: Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi believed he should have been awarded a penalty after going down under Virgil van Dijk’s challenge during Liverpool’s 1-0 victory. VAR did not intervene.
WEBB’S VERDICT: The decision was quick and efficient, with a significant reduction in delays this year.
