The far-right politician, who supports Putin, surprised many by winning the first round of Romania’s presidential elections on Sunday. His surge on social media went unnoticed by pollsters.
Călin Georgescu, 62, a former member of the ultranationalist AUR party, ran as an independent and was initially polling in single digits. But his TikTok campaign clips portraying him as a horseback riding, martial arts fighting anti-establishment figure gained traction recently.
“It’s a TikTok win,” said Romanian analyst Ion M. Ionita. “You don’t need a party, just need to go viral on social media, and he has succeeded.”
Georgescu, known for his religious, ultraconservative views that resonate with rural and young male voters, claimed victory with 23% of the votes without spending any money on his campaign.
Since no candidate secured 50%, Georgescu will face liberal leader Elena Lasconi in the run-off vote on December 8.
Georgescu’s success reflects the rise of Trump-style populism in Europe and signals a shift in Romanian attitudes towards Russia and its conflict in Ukraine.
