Former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio urged his party to “be more honest” in the wake of Americans feeling “betrayed” by the Democratic Party’s silence on President Biden’s decline.
De Blasio participated in a panel on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” to provide further insights into Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party’s significant losses in the 2024 election.
He suggested that part of the issue was Harris’ reluctance to distance herself from Biden and the Democrats’ delay in criticizing Biden until he exited the race.
“Let’s face it, we need to be more transparent. One of the reasons for this discontent is that the American people were frustrated with the perception that the Democratic Party was covering up for Joe Biden. They were already displeased with Biden on various issues like inflation, and people are struggling,” de Blasio stated.
‘CHEAP FAKES’ AND ‘GRATUITOUS’: LIBERAL MEDIA FUMED OVER CRITICISMS OF BIDEN’S MENTAL FITNESS BEFORE DEBATE
“I’ll take my share of the blame,” he confessed. “I mean, I wanted to believe Joe Biden could make it through. He was a great president in many ways. I wanted to believe he could hang on, but it stood to reason that he should not continue as our candidate. It stood to reason that one term was right, and a lot of Democrats kind of kept their mouths shut. And I think people felt out in the country a little betrayed by that.”
Until Biden dropped out of the race in July, Democrats and members of the mainstream media tried to downplay concerns about his mental state, insisting he was “sharp” behind the scenes.
Following Biden’s exit from the race, more Democrats began to openly criticize the president, with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi even suggesting that Biden should have stepped down earlier.
“So this time, why don’t we become the party of honesty and authenticity? Why don’t we take, ironically, a page from Donald Trump’s playbook and be a bit more upfront and less concerned about diplomatic language? I believe that if we genuinely address what people are going through and fight back, our chances in 2026 are quite promising, especially in regaining the House and beyond,” de Blasio remarked.
De Blasio also contended that Harris’ unwavering loyalty to Biden did more harm than good, stating that Harris failed to “draw a clear distinction” between them.

“Ultimately, that interview on ‘The View’ was particularly damaging, where Kamala Harris couldn’t provide a difference from Biden, and sadly, the American people have grown disillusioned with Biden regardless of his accomplishments. So, I believe this will be part of the historical backdrop – the campaign needed to create a respectful separation from Biden, needed to show the American people fervently that we would offer something different, and that never materialized,” he concluded.
Harris consistently avoided responding to inquiries about Biden’s mental condition, even during her campaign.
