In the matchup between Memphis and Michigan State, Memphis’ guard duo of Tyrese Hunter and PJ Haggerty dominated, scoring a total of 39 points to lead Memphis to a 71-63 victory, securing their spot in the Maui Invitational title game.
With this win, the Tigers (6-0) will face off against the winner of the game between No. 4 Auburn and No. 12 North Carolina.
Hunter showcased his scoring prowess by tallying 23 points, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. Haggerty contributed 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Together, they combined for 48 points in their previous game against UConn.
In addition, Colby Rogers chipped in with 10 points for Memphis, who shot 47% from the field.
On the opposing side, Jase Richardson led Michigan State with 18 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Jaden Akins added 12 points and Frankie Fidler contributed 10. Despite their struggles with 3-point shooting coming into the game, the Spartans managed to shoot 35% from downtown, matching Memphis’ percentage. However, Michigan State’s 13 turnovers led to 22 points for Memphis, who shot 42% from the field.
Michigan State made a late push to cut a 15-point deficit to seven, but Hunter’s four-point play helped secure the win for Memphis. The Spartans got within five points with 45 seconds remaining but were unable to close the gap any further.
Memphis took control of the game in the second half, pulling away as Haggerty, Rogers, and Cisse made key plays to extend their lead.
The Tigers held onto their lead in the first half, with Hunter’s shooting and key plays from his teammates maintaining their advantage. Despite a late surge from Michigan State, Memphis maintained a narrow lead going into halftime.
