Late Sunday evening, President Biden granted a pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, saving him from being sentenced in two separate court cases where he was found guilty of buying a gun illegally and owing $1.4 million in taxes. The president argued that these convictions were politically motivated and unfair.
Despite this narrative, a closer look at Hunter Biden’s legal troubles tells a different story, which is being highlighted by those involved in the prosecutions following the president’s decision.
Special prosecutor David Weiss stated in a court filing after the pardon that there was no evidence of selective prosecution in the case. IRS whistleblowers who raised concerns about Hunter Biden’s tax issues also criticized the pardon, claiming that the Justice Department nearly let the president’s son off the hook for several felonies.
“President Biden has the authority to intervene in favor of his son, but he opted for a public pardon rather than secretive maneuvers by his appointees. This privileged treatment for the powerful is disappointing for law-abiding citizens,” said IRS whistleblowers Supervisory Special Agent Gary Shapley and Special Agent Joe Ziegler in a statement.
Biden’s Reversal on Pardoning Hunter Biden
“No amount of lies or spin can hide the simple truth that the Justice Department nearly let the President’s son off the hook for multiple felonies. We did our duty, told the truth, and followed the law,” continued the IRS whistleblowers, referencing their legal actions against Hunter Biden’s attorney.
