Canada prohibits more assault-style weapons, recommends supporting Ukraine via donation

Canada announced a ban on 324 assault-style firearms on Thursday as part of their ongoing efforts to tighten gun control.

Canadian leaders are collaborating with Ukraine to donate the banned guns to support Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion.

“Every bit of assistance we can offer to the Ukrainians is one step toward their victory,” Defense Minister Bill Blair stated.

The latest restrictions, revealed by Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, also involve investments in border security to prevent smuggling and trafficking, enhancing firearms controls, and enforcing harsher penalties for gun traffickers.

“This means these firearms can no longer be used,” Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc emphasized.

The strengthening of gun control laws in Canada follows the ban of 1,500 makes and models of firearms in May 2020. Last month, the number grew to over 2,000 with the identification of new models.

“Firearms designed for the battlefield clearly do not belong in our communities,” emphasized Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions, and Intergovernmental Affairs. “Too often, these types of weapons have been used to commit some of the worst atrocities Canada has ever witnessed.”
