Multinational Police Mission in Haiti refutes claims of unpaid wages, Conflict News reports

Kenyan-led force responds to claims of officers resigning due to unpaid wages

A United Nations-backed security mission to Haiti, led by Kenyan forces, has refuted reports suggesting that some officers have not been paid for months.

In a statement released on Friday, the Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti (MSS) stated that all personnel have received their salaries, including allowances, and no officer has resigned as claimed.

The MSS remains dedicated to supporting the Haitian National Police [HNP] in efforts to combat gang activities and restore stability in Haiti.

The allegations of unpaid wages arise as the MSS faces challenges in making a positive impact in Haiti, where armed gangs have caused widespread violence and instability.

Reports indicate that a significant portion of the capital, Port-au-Prince, is under gang control, leading to over 700,000 people being displaced due to the violence.

Recent news reports suggest that nearly 20 Kenyan officers have resigned from the MSS due to payment delays and unfavorable working conditions, though the mission denies these claims.

Concerns about funding challenges have plagued the MSS since its inception, with Kenya sending fewer officers than initially planned and uncertainty surrounding US financial support.

Amid calls for a UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti, the current security situation remains precarious following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moise and ongoing gang violence.

The lack of federal elections in Haiti has further complicated governance issues, allowing gangs to exploit the political vacuum for their own gain.

The dismissal of interim Prime Minister Garry Conille has raised questions about corruption within the transitional government and the future of Haiti’s leadership.
