It’s always exciting to reach in and pull out the hidden items to reveal the small gifts inside. It could be as simple as a pack of gum or as practical as a pair of cozy new socks! Having this list of ideas in one place makes holiday shopping even easier, even if you missed out on the Black Friday deals.
The Tradition of Christmas Stockings
The famous poem “The Night Before Christmas” tells us that Christmas stockings have been “hung by the chimney with care” for over two hundred years. However, the exact origins and reasons for this tradition are not widely known.
Many believe that the tradition of Christmas stockings is a tribute to St. Nicholas, the Christian saint known for his generosity and gift-giving to those in need. He is the historical figure behind the modern Santa Claus traditions.
Legend has it that St. Nicholas once helped a widower who could not afford a dowry for his three daughters. In a generous act, St. Nicholas dropped gold coins down the chimney of the widower’s home by night. One of the coins landed in a stocking hanging by the fire to dry. The widower and his daughters were thrilled to discover the coins the next morning, alleviating their worries.
The legacy of St. Nicholas continues to inspire the true spirit of Christmas today! My children also partake in the tradition of leaving a boot out for “St. Nick” to fill with treats every December 6th.

A fun variation on the stocking stuffer tradition is to introduce one new gift into the stockings each day during the twelve days of the Christmas season. This tradition typically runs from December 25 to the Epiphany on January 6. Your kids will enjoy looking forward to a new surprise each day, keeping their focus on the entire Christmas season!
