Cohere is recognized as one of the top AI startups alongside OpenAI and Anthropic, with a valuation of $5.5 billion as of July. It was co-founded by an author of the influential “Attention Is All You Need” paper that was instrumental in the large language model (LLM) revolution.
Headquartered in Toronto and San Francisco, Cohere focuses on providing AI solutions to enterprise clients rather than developing consumer chatbots. Recent reports suggest that Palantir, known for its partnership with Anthropic, is also partnered with Cohere. Cohere’s AI models are currently being utilized by undisclosed Palantir clients, as highlighted in a video shared by Palantir.
The video features a presentation from November 2024 at DevCon1, Palantir’s inaugural developer conference. Cohere is mentioned as “already deploying to Palantir customers” in remarks by Cohere engineer and former Palantir employee Billy Trend.
During the presentation, Trend expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Palantir and shared insights on how Cohere serves their clientele. Technical details were the main focus of Trend’s presentation in the video, with a mention of one particular case where Cohere’s AI was deployed for a Palantir client with strict data storage constraints and a need for Arabic inference, which aligns with Cohere’s expertise.
Trend mentioned that Palantir customers can access Cohere’s latest AI models through ‘compute modules’ within Foundry, Palantir’s platform aimed at commercial users. While the specific clients utilizing Cohere through Palantir are undisclosed, it suggests potential use by corporations.
Palantir, known for its partnerships with various corporations and government entities, including Airbus, has been actively involved in the defense-tech sector. Cohere, on the other hand, has highlighted collaborations with tech giants like Fujitsu but has not publicly disclosed any partnerships with Palantir.
When asked about the potential military or intelligence applications of its AI and its overall stance on such deployments, Cohere chose not to provide a comment. Palantir also refrained from immediate response. Additionally, there have been reports of defense tech utilization of AI from OpenAI, including a recent deal with Anduril.
