Rory McIlroy and world No 1 Scottie Scheffler clinched victory for the PGA Tour team against LIV Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in the inaugural edition of ‘The Showdown’.
This unique competition marked the first time PGA Tour players competed against LIV Golf players outside of majors and the Olympics. DeChambeau and Koepka, both now part of the Saudi-backed circuit, were unable to participate in PGA Tour events since 2022.
Scheffler and McIlroy maintained the lead throughout and secured victory in just 14 holes at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas.
With four total points available – two in singles play – 2 1/2 points were needed for the victory. The final McIlroy/DeChambeau match was not played to completion as the PGA Tour duo secured victory in a dominant fashion.
The format included one point for a six-hole fourballs match, one point for a six-hole foursomes match, and one point each for singles over the last six holes.
McIlroy started strong, sinking a spectacular 40-foot eagle putt on the par-five fourth hole, setting the tone for their win against DeChambeau and Koepka.
“Rory getting off to a great start was big for our team,” Scheffler commented.
