When you imagine a folding cargo ebike, you probably think of a model with the cargo rack behind the rider. Car.Los Mobility from Germany has created the V1, combining the load capacity of a front-loader with the convenience of a folding ebike.
The Car.Los V1 cargo ebike was initially shown as a prototype at Eurobike 2023, and later received recognition from iF Design judges at the Taipei Cycle Show, earning a nomination for Best Cargo Bike at Cycling World 2024.
Its standout feature is the patent-pending mid-frame folding mechanism that reduces its size in seconds, along with a folding handlebar and a cargo basket that folds up for more aerodynamic riding.
When folded, the V1 measures 108 x 44 x 83 cm (42.5 x 17.3 x 32.6 in), making it easy to transport in a car, train, or public transport. This folding capability is also beneficial for those without a garage to store a full-size cargo bike.
The V1 is equipped with a 250-W Brose Drive-T mid-mount motor that provides pedal-assist up to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) and 70 Nm (51.6 lb.ft) of torque. It features an Enviolo N380 Cargo stepless shifting hub for seamless gear changes. The bike also includes a 522-Wh battery under the cargo basket for stable handling.
The PAS long-john can carry up to 195 kg (430 lb), with the Vario Basket handling up to 65 kg. It features a double kickstand for stability, 20-inch rear wheels and 16-inch front wheels with Schwalbe Pick-Up tires. The bike is equipped with Magura MT05 hydraulic disc brakes for reliable stopping power and includes LED lights.
The V1, dubbed the “Swiss pocket knife on two wheels,” is now available for purchase at €5,199 (~US$5,400). A Basic version without the front basket is available for €400 less. Optional accessories like a rear rack can also be added.
