Last Saturday, the NFL and college football had games airing at the same time, with the NFL winning the ratings war.
The new 12-team College Football Playoff format debuted, but did not attract as many viewers as the NFL.
SMU and Penn State played at 12 p.m. ET and had an average of 6.4 million viewers on the TNT networks.

The NFL game, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans, started at 1 p.m. ET and had an average of 15.5 million viewers on NBC.
Later in the afternoon, the Steelers-Ravens game on FOX drew 15.4 million viewers, while Clemson-Texas on TNT had 8.6 million viewers.
When not competing with the College Football Playoffs, ratings for NFL games were significantly higher.

Indiana-Notre Dame on Friday night and Tennessee-Ohio State on Saturday fared well in viewership.
The overall average viewership of the first round of the College Football Playoffs was 10.6 million, higher than most college games this season.

Upcoming clashes between college football bowl games and NFL matchups are expected.
