The historic Convention against Cybercrime was adopted by the 193 UN Member States through consensus after five years of negotiations. This landmark agreement is the first of its kind and holds great significance for people worldwide.

A crucial response to a growing threat
With 67.4 per cent of the global population accessing the Internet in 2023, the threat of cybercrime is a significant concern. Cybercriminals use various methods like malware, ransomware, and hacking to exploit digital systems, leading to theft of money, data, and other valuable information. The lack of resilience among those who are digitally disadvantaged further increases vulnerability. This Convention will enable faster, more coordinated responses to cyber threats, making both digital and physical environments safer.

Enhanced global cooperation
Investigating transnational crimes, whether online or offline, is complex due to the decentralized nature of data and networks. The Convention focuses on frameworks for accessing and exchanging electronic evidence, essential for investigations. States will benefit from a 24/7 network for international cooperation in investigations, prosecutions, and more.
Protection for vulnerable groups
Children are especially vulnerable to online exploitation on platforms like social media and chat apps. The Convention is the first global treaty addressing sexual violence against children using ICT. By criminalizing these offenses, governments have stronger tools to protect children and hold perpetrators accountable.

Supporting victims
Cybercrime affects people globally, and victims deserve adequate support. The Convention encourages States to provide victims with recovery services, compensation, and removal of illicit content according to domestic laws.
Emphasis on prevention
The Convention stresses the importance of proactive measures to prevent cybercrime. It calls for comprehensive prevention strategies, training for public and private sectors, offender rehabilitation programs, and victim support. The aim is to reduce risks and create a safer digital environment for all.
