Netflix mentions that its live NFL games on Christmas Day attracted a significant audience, being labeled as “the most-streamed NFL games in US history” by Nielsen ratings. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers achieved a 24.1M AMA (average minute audience), while the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens reached 24.3M AMA, totaling nearly 65 million total viewers.
Although Netflix struggled with the overwhelming number of households tuning in for the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul boxing match last month, its systems performed well during the two NFL games and the star-studded performances from Mariah Carey and Beyoncé.
The NBA, which usually doesn’t have competition from the NFL on Christmas, reported that despite the Netflix broadcasts, its games recorded the “most-watched Christmas Day in five years, averaging 5.25 million viewers per game in the U.S.” Viewership was up by 84 percent from the previous year, with all five games showing an increase.
The NFL provided an initial look at viewership on Wednesday, revealing that the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers had become the second most popular live title on Netflix and that one-third of Netflix’s viewers at that time were watching the game.
