Nick Kyrgios returned to the tennis court in style, teaming up with Novak Djokovic for a thrilling doubles match at the Brisbane International.
After an 18-month absence, Kyrgios and Djokovic defeated Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 10-8, much to the delight of the crowd in Brisbane.
The spectators witnessed some incredible moments, including a spectacular around-the-net winner from Djokovic and a tweener from Kyrgios.
Despite Djokovic’s victory over Kyrgios in the 2022 Wimbledon final, the two have developed a close friendship over time.
“That was incredible! The atmosphere was amazing. It feels great to be back,” Djokovic expressed.
“I want to thank Nick for playing with me. He mentioned the other day that it would be a pleasure, and it truly was!
“I’m happy to share the court with him on his comeback. I haven’t played many doubles matches, so I was following Nick’s lead.”
Kyrgios also shared his thoughts on the match, saying, “I was surprised to see moments where he doubted himself a bit, and I had to remind him that he’s the greatest of all time. The experience of being out on the court with him was unforgettable.”
“Looking around at the fans and the stadium, it hit me how fortunate I am to be back after this injury. I cherish every moment on the court and don’t take it for granted. I don’t know how many more Australian summers I have left.”
The duo made a promise to play together again before one of them retires.
Tomorrow, Kyrgios will compete in his first singles match since June 2023, live on Sky Sports Tennis, against France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Djokovic will face Australia’s Rinky Hijikata.
On Wednesday, Djokovic and Kyrgios will team up again for the men’s doubles match against top seeds Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus.
