Home appliance manufacturer Bosch is showcasing its first Matter-enabled appliance at CES this week. The 100 Series French Door Bottom Mount Refrigerator, which was launched in November, will be available for purchase in the US this spring.
Priced at $2,500, this fridge contains a chip that supports Matter and is expected to receive a firmware update to the smart home standard later in the summer, according to Eelco Lammertink of BSH, the company that owns Bosch.
The 100 Series fridge is a counterpart to the Siemens XXL Fridge, another Matter-enabled appliance, spotted at IFA in Berlin. BSH plans to integrate Matter into all its appliances in the coming years, starting with refrigerators, followed by other appliance categories.
The 100 Series will support Matter 1.3, allowing remote temperature control and notifications from the fridge on your smart home platform. This enables features like alerting if the door is left open.
With Matter, the connection between the appliance and the smart home ecosystem becomes local, ensuring faster and more secure communication. Currently, Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant support Matter appliances, with Amazon expected to join soon.
BSH plans to introduce energy reporting and management capabilities to the fridge, enabling it to be part of a whole-home energy management system. Existing appliances won’t be updated to Matter due to technical challenges and the risk of bricking the device.
