Barcelona dominated their rivals Real Madrid in a thrilling Spanish Super Cup Clasico final in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, securing a 5-2 victory to claim the first trophy of the Hansi Flick era.
Although Kylian Mbappe initially put Madrid ahead, Barcelona responded with five goals before their goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off in the second half.
Madrid was seeking redemption after their 4-0 defeat by Barcelona in October’s LaLiga Clasico, but instead, they were left defeated by their archrivals in Jeddah.
After Mbappe’s goal, Lamine Yamal equalized, and Robert Lewandowski scored from the penalty spot to put Barcelona ahead. Raphinha netted a brace and Alejandro Balde also found the back of the net.
Rodrygo Goes scored a goal for Madrid from a free-kick, but they couldn’t capitalize on their numerical advantage in a humiliating defeat for the European champions.
“It’s really nice, it had been a season since we won a trophy. It’s always special and, on top of that, in a Clasico against Real Madrid,” Barcelona defender Jules Kounde told Movistar.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted that their poor defending was the main reason for the heavy defeat, stating, “We defended badly and that cost us the game – they found their goals quite easily.”
Both teams stuck to their starting lineups from the semifinals. Yamal and Lewandowski were instrumental for Barcelona, while Mbappe shone for Madrid.
