While firestorms are raging in Southern California, a political firestorm is brewing on Capitol Hill.

The regular occurrence of natural disasters has turned into a fiscal nightmare for Congress. Lawmakers’ approach to addressing these disasters poses a significant challenge to tackling the deficit and national debt.

Expect exorbitant costs.

“This is going to be a very expensive event,” predicted Rep. George Whitesides, D-Calif.

FEMA is preparing for significant costs, according to Administrator Deanne Criswell.

President Biden has committed to providing assistance, stating that Congress will need to allocate funds to help those affected by natural disasters.

Various natural disasters continue to impact different parts of the United States, with the cost of recovery being substantial. Congress allocated $100 billion before Christmas to aid hurricane victims and replenish FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund.
