Several large cities are reportedly expected to be hit by Trump’s immigration authorities shortly after inauguration.
Donald Trump’s top border official has stated that the new Republican administration will initiate large operations to detain and deport undocumented immigrants starting on the day of the President-elect’s inauguration on Tuesday.
The incoming administration’s “border czar”, Tom Homan, mentioned in an interview with Fox News that the actions planned are not classified as “raids”.
Homan stated that targeted enforcement operations will take place, with Chicago being one of the cities expected to see actions shortly after Trump’s second term begins.
Furthermore, Homan indicated that city jails in sanctuary cities, which house a significant number of migrants, will be targeted. The goal is to “arrest a bad guy in the safety and security of a county jail”.
Despite reports suggesting that Chicago, New York, and Miami may be targets, Homan did not provide specific details on the timing of the operation.
Homan’s recent remarks follow his statement that ICE would be able to arrest criminal aliens without constraints. He also mentioned a “big raid across the country”.
Trump has promised to carry out the largest domestic deportation operation in American history without specifying the exact number of individuals affected.
Additionally, his administration is considering actions to withhold funds from sanctuary cities that do not cooperate with deportations.
Amid preparations for crackdowns on immigrants, some groups have reported individuals choosing to “self-deport” rather than wait for forced removal.
Meanwhile, protests against Trump’s inauguration took place in Washington, DC, with concerns over the impact of his policies on constitutional rights during his second term.
Activists gathered for the “People’s March” wearing the pink hats that symbolized previous protests against Trump’s first inauguration in 2017.
