Maryland man charged with murdering girlfriend and hiding body in makeshift grave

A man from Capitol Heights, Maryland, was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing his girlfriend and attempting to hide her body in a makeshift tomb inside his home, as per police reports.

The Prince George’s Police Department announced that Devontae Gray, 30, has been charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses in connection with the death of Alexis Schuler, 29, from Washington, D.C.

The Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. reached out to authorities in Prince George’s County on Jan. 18 regarding a missing persons case involving Schuler, who had been reported missing earlier that week.

On Saturday, a search warrant was executed at Gray’s residence by the Prince George’s Police Department as part of the investigation.

During the search at Gray’s home, investigators discovered what were believed to be Schuler’s remains, hidden by Gray’s deliberate efforts.

Gray was apprehended on the spot and reportedly admitted to the crime.

On Tuesday, authorities confirmed through the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that Schuler had been shot.

FOX 5 D.C. obtained the charging documents, which revealed that Gray was seen on surveillance footage entering and leaving his residence with construction materials wearing protective gear on Jan. 12 and 13.

The materials captured in the footage included cement, sheet rock, cinder blocks, plastic bags, and large black storage containers.

During a welfare check at Gray’s house on Jan. 14, authorities noted an unusual odor upon entering the premises, attributing it to the unsanitary condition of the residence.

The charging documents further indicated that during a follow-up search at the residence on Jan. 19, a semi-automatic handgun was found along with newly installed drywall, acetone, lemon ammonia, and other cleaning and construction materials.

With the assistance of the Prince George’s County Fire Department, drywall was removed, revealing a hidden “makeshift tomb” beneath the stairs, as detailed in the charging documents.

An opened bin inside the area contained a human foot believed to be Schuler’s, according to police.
