Democrats Join DOGE Subcommittee, One Member Advocating for “Good Government”

Democrats have selected members to serve on the House Oversight Subcommittee for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and are prepared to “fight back” against cuts to critical federal programs.

The newly established agency, part of President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign promises, aims to reduce government waste and increase transparency in government spending. It was established through an executive order on Monday.

Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., announced on X Tuesday that she will be the ranking member.

Stansbury will be joined by Rep. Stephen Lynch, D- Mass., Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas, and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, as well as Eleanor Holmes Norton, a non-voting congressional delegate for Washington, D.C., per Politico. Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., the ranking member of the full Oversight and Government Reform Committee, will be permitted to sit on the subcommittee in an ex officio capacity, the outlet reports.

Stansbury pledged to “utilize every available tool to collaborate across party lines and challenge detrimental policies affecting Americans.”

She mentioned in a video on X that Democrats are fully committed to DOGE if it functions to enhance government efficiency and streamline federal agency operations. However, if it devolves into “political theater to serve President Trump and his wealthy allies,” they are prepared to push back.

“I have a clear vision of good governance and am prepared to fight for it,” Stansbury stated in a separate announcement, according to Politico. “Simultaneously, I am ready to defend crucial programs, services, and employees that ensure our communities’ safety and economic stability.”

Garcia also expressed his intention to “push back” against the House GOP’s attempts to undermine the federal workforce. He criticized Republicans for planning to cut vital federal programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, in favor of tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations.

He specifically targeted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., who chairs the subcommittee.

“Marjorie Taylor Greene and her extremist allies are promoting a radical agenda in this subcommittee that includes eliminating the Department of Education and programs for seniors and veterans,” Garcia stated in a release.

“We are prepared to resist from the outset, denounce efforts to reduce our social safety net, and ensure the well-being of working families and the middle class.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Greene revealed the Republican members chosen to serve on the subcommittee, including Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas; Rep. William Timmons, S.C.; Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas; Rep. Brian Jack, R-Ga.; Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn.; Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo.; and Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas.

She stated that they bring extensive experience and are committed to establishing a more efficient, effective, and accountable federal government.

“Together, we will strive to eliminate waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement within federal agencies, ensuring that the government operates efficiently and transparently for the American people,” Greene said in a statement.

The developments come as former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy departs from the newly established department.

Ramaswamy, along with Elon Musk, the wealthiest person globally, was chosen by Trump in November to head DOGE. However, he is expected to launch a Republican campaign for Ohio governor next week, per a Fox News source.

His pursuit of elected office requires him to step away from DOGE due to its structure. Ohio’s term-limited GOP Gov. Mike DeWine cannot seek re-election in 2026.
