Adrianne Todman has been busy doing laundry for the past four days.

“I’m taking a break. Literally, I did laundry on Tuesday,” she shared at the recent Inman Connect New York event. “It was quite exciting. I sorted my whites. It was awesome. It was great.”

While she’s enjoying her break, the pressing issue of the country’s affordable housing crisis remains on Todman’s mind.

“The only thing we have to fear is inaction,” she expressed. “We need leaders advocating, assisting new homeowners, and finding solutions in this changing landscape. We need innovative ideas.”

Todman highlighted the stagnation in housing starts since the Great Recession, attributing it to the aftermath of risky mortgage lending practices that led to a focus on luxury developments rather than affordable starter homes.

She emphasized the urgent need for new starter homes and discussed the misconception that affordable housing is solely for certain demographics, noting its widespread importance across various socioeconomic groups.

Todman asserted that government intervention is crucial to address the affordability crisis and stimulate the housing market, especially in the wake of recent economic challenges.

She underscored the missed opportunities in previous housing legislation and called for a stronger commitment to implement effective solutions for affordable housing.

As she looks ahead to the future of HUD, Todman anticipates the confirmation of the nominee Scott Turner and hopes for collaborative efforts to tackle the nation’s housing issues.
