Gaza’s Aid Efforts Hindered by Devastated Roads and Lurking Bombs

Two weeks after the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel took effect, aid is flowing into the Gaza Strip.

The World Food Programme, the main UN food agency, has reported distributing more food to Palestinians in Gaza in the first four days of the ceasefire than in any month during the war.

Over 32,000 tonnes of aid have been delivered to the enclave since the ceasefire began, coming through two crossings in the north and one in the south, according to the agency’s latest update.

Reports indicate that bakeries have reopened, high-energy biscuits are being distributed, and Gaza’s police force has resumed patrols to help maintain order.

However, humanitarian organizations are facing challenges in aid distribution due to damaged or blocked roads, Israeli inspections, and the presence of unexploded ordnance scattered throughout the area.

The UN estimates that 5 to 10 percent of the ammunition dropped by Israel in Gaza did not detonate, posing a significant danger to both civilians and aid workers in the region.
