NJ Democratic candidates promise to obstruct ICE from pursuing undocumented immigrants

New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial candidates promised to assist undocumented immigrants in avoiding President Donald Trump’s ICE raids during the state’s first primary debate of the year.

Five out of six candidates raised their hands when asked if they believe that protecting immigrants in New Jersey should be a goal of the next governor, even those who are in the country illegally.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill did not raise her hand but emphasized the importance of protecting all people in New Jersey, especially in accordance with the Constitution.

In discussing the Laken Riley Act, candidates expressed less unanimity. However, they voiced opposition to the bill, which allows for the detention of illegal immigrants accused of violent offenses.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer defended his support for the act but highlighted the importance of distinguishing between innocent undocumented individuals and those who commit violent crimes.

The Trump administration’s stance on undocumented individuals was highlighted by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who emphasized that anyone in the U.S. illegally is considered a criminal.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop objected to the Laken Riley Act, describing it as dangerous and undermining the authority of the New Jersey attorney general.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka criticized the Laken Riley Act, asserting that it perpetuates false narratives about immigrants and is rooted in White supremacy and racism.

Baraka emphasized the need to challenge Trump’s political agenda and protect the constitutional rights of all individuals, regardless of immigration status.
