This is not the first time the Petro administration has found itself in troubled waters, though.
His presidency has been marked by significant political crises, both at home and abroad.
For instance, his decision to involve Venezuela and Cuba in Colombia’s peace process has raised doubts among more conservative groups.
Additionally, his ambitious agenda for reforms in healthcare, pensions, and labor has faced challenges from legislative obstacles and opposition resistance.
The government has also experienced instability due to frequent cabinet changes and internal conflicts. Allegations of corruption surrounding Petro’s son and his 2022 campaign financing have further weakened public trust.
However, some of Petro’s supporters view his recent confrontation with Trump as a sign of his defiance against US pressure and his determination to defend Colombian dignity.
His base, which includes progressive voters, human rights advocates, and those critical of US intervention, see his resistance to Trump’s policies as a reaffirmation of national sovereignty.
“I believe that his actions were positive,” stated Robinson Duarte, an economist who supported Petro in 2022. “It hasn’t changed my support for him. I stand by him.”
While Trump’s threats of tariffs and sanctions have been temporarily averted, concerns about potential economic consequences linger. This could impact Petro-aligned candidates in the 2026 elections, particularly if economic anxieties persist.
Nevertheless, experts emphasize that Petro’s ability to navigate political crises should not be underestimated. His skill in turning moments of conflict into opportunities for mobilization has been a defining aspect of his career.
If he can portray the clash with Trump as a defense against foreign aggression, he may strengthen his coalition leading up to the 2026 election.
“He has positioned himself as someone capable of asserting our autonomy and dignity in dealings with the US,” remarked Duarte. “Regardless of whether it’s Trump or the most powerful individual in the world, we will not bow to their political agenda.”
