More cases of sudden vision loss are being linked to Ozempic

Scientists are still puzzled as to why some individuals experience eye problems when taking common weight loss and diabetes medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, indicating that there is much we still don’t know about this new class of drugs.

Physicians at the University of Utah’s John A. Moran Eye Center have identified these medications as a common factor among patients who developed vision issues. In a study, nine patients experienced potentially blinding conditions due to optic nerve damage while using GLP-1 agonist drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Earlier research in July 2024 revealed that these drugs increased the risk of developing non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) by a factor of seven, although causation was not established. Recently, studies from Denmark have also shown an increased risk of NAION for patients on these medications.

The latest study found that patients presented with various vision impairments affecting the optic nerve. Researchers suspect that rapid blood sugar changes induced by these drugs could be responsible for the eye issues, rather than GLP-1 toxicity.

While these drugs have had positive health impacts, including aiding in weight loss and managing diabetes, there have been concerns about potential side effects like suicidal ideation and surgery complications. Ongoing research is investigating the effects of these drugs on eye diseases.

It is important for patients and physicians to be aware of the potential link between these medications and vision problems without discontinuing treatment. More research is needed to understand these mechanisms and identify at-risk patients.

Anyone experiencing sudden vision loss while taking these medications should seek medical attention immediately.
