OpenAI is expanding its presence to Germany. A press release issued on Friday states that the maker of ChatGPT plans to establish an office in Munich in the upcoming months.
In a statement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned, “Germany is known for its technical expertise, academic excellence, and industrial innovation. By opening our first office in Germany, we aim to extend the benefits of AI to more individuals, businesses, and institutions.”
According to the press release, OpenAI has been in talks with German officials since 2023 about setting up a satellite office in the country. The startup noted that Germany in Europe has the largest number of users, paying subscribers, and API developers utilizing OpenAI’s technology.
A spokesperson from OpenAI informed TechCrunch via email that the new office will initially recruit for roles in go-to-market, global affairs, and communications. However, they did not disclose the exact number of positions available.
OpenAI’s expansion to Southern Germany follows the establishment of offices in Paris, Brussels, and Dublin, strengthening its presence in the EU.
