Strategies for Democrats to Counterattack

Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin is known for referring to his party as the Democracy Party. He emphasizes that his constituents are the small-d democracy under threat from the Trump administration’s attacks on privacy, government agencies, and constitutional principles. Raskin, a former constitutional law professor, is actively involved in organizing legal and political efforts against the actions of the Trump White House, including serving on the Democratic House caucus’s Rapid Response Task Force. He was a floor manager for Trump’s second impeachment and a member of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the US Capitol. Currently, he holds the position of ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee. I interviewed Raskin as Congress was preparing to recess.

Chris Lehmann: Can you tell me more about the rapid-response team announced recently and its mandate?

Jamie Raskin: They are countering the White House’s actions through popular protest, education, legislative opposition, and litigation across the country.

Chris Lehmann: In light of the Republicans’ concerns over Elon Musk, do you plan to pursue legal action against him?

Jamie Raskin: Yes, we are using the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986 to pursue a class-action suit against Musk and DOGE.

Chris Lehmann: How do you see the courts enforcing compliance with their orders if the Trump administration defies them?

Jamie Raskin: The courts have the authority to hold individuals in contempt and impose fines until they comply with court orders.
