Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn faced off, maintaining a wide distance, at the second press conference leading up to their highly anticipated clash. Security guards were present to prevent any repeat of the chaotic scenes from the previous conference.
Both sons of British boxing legends, Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn, Eubank Jr and Conor Benn are set to fight at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, April 26. The second promotional press conference took place at the London venue on Thursday.
During this press conference, Eubank was playfully scanned with a mock ‘egg detector’, referencing the egg-throwing incident from the launch event earlier in the week. The tension from that incident led to a brief scuffle which required security intervention.
Eubank addressed Nigel Benn directly, saying, “You did put your hand on my neck. I’m going to give you a pass. If your hand ever touches me again, you won’t get it back.”
This remark agitated Conor Benn, who interjected, “Shut your mouth. This whole thing is getting on my nerves. I can’t wait to smash your head in.”
Eubank Jr responded, “Mission accomplished. I can’t wait, my friend.”
While Nigel Benn remained calm and apologized for the press conference incident, he confidently stated, “He’s poked the bear [ahead of April 26 fight]. I just know what is going to happen. I know what my son can do. He’s actually a much better fighter than me.”
The original fight between Eubank Jr and Benn was scheduled for 2022 but was canceled due to Conor Benn failing drug tests. However, Benn’s provisional suspension was lifted in November, allowing him to reignite his rivalry with Eubank Jr.
Eubank Jr also announced during the press conference that he would be donating £50,000 from his fight purse to the undercard fighters who were affected by the cancellation of the 2022 fight. He called for Eddie Hearn and Conor Benn to match his donation.
Eubank Jr emphasized the seriousness of the upcoming fight, stating, “This is a real fight. This is going to be like the first fight between my father and Nigel Benn. It’s going to be special.”
