Officials in Egypt have uncovered a 3,000-year-old mining complex that includes ancient homes, workshops, and baths.
The excavation took place at Jabal Sukari, southwest of Marsa Alam in the Red Sea Governorate. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the discovery in a Facebook post on Feb. 25.
The site includes remnants of a factory used for extracting gold from quartz veins, showing evidence of sophisticated mining techniques.

The miners’ living quarters were also found, along with various other structures that provide insights into their daily lives.
Archaeologists found 628 ostraca, pieces of pottery and stone used for writing and drawing, with inscriptions in hieroglyphics, demotic Egyptian, and Greek.

Among the artifacts discovered were Ptolemaic-era bronze coins, terracotta statues, and pottery vessels for various purposes.

Artifacts found at the site have been moved to a safe area away from the modern mining activities at Sukari Gold Mine.
The excavation has provided valuable insights into ancient Egyptian mining techniques and the lives of miners in the Eastern Desert over the centuries.

Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy expressed delight at the discoveries, highlighting their importance in revealing the area’s historical secrets.
“This project is part of the Ministry’s commitment to preserving Egypt’s cultural heritage and aligning with the country’s development and economic plans,” added Fathy.
These recent finds add to the ongoing discoveries in Egypt in 2025, including the long-lost tomb of King Thutmose II and the tomb of Teti Neb Fu, an ancient physician.
