Daniel Jones has found a new team, and Anthony Richardson will face some competition.
The experienced quarterback has agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts, FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported Tuesday. The agreement includes $13.15 million in guaranteed money and has the potential to reach $17 million. The Minnesota Vikings made a significant effort to bring Jones back, as per Schultz’s report.
Jones, who will be 28 in May, was released by the New York Giants in November before joining the Vikings’ practice squad later in the season. This move allowed Jones to learn from Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell and serve as a backup to Sam Darnold during his successful season.
Now, Jones will have the opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback position with the Colts. Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard mentioned at the combine that the team intended to bring in a veteran quarterback to vie with Richardson for the starting role in 2025.
Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has faced challenges in his NFL career so far. Despite this, Jones’ signing with the Colts could open the door for J.J. McCarthy to take over as the Vikings’ starting quarterback in 2025.
Jones was ranked 89th in FOX Sports’ top 100 free agents list and was the fifth-ranked quarterback on the list.
