Abortion research group criticizes state reporting requirements for being misused by lawmakers.

States must reconsider and oppose mandated abortion reporting requirements in light of the “hostile political climate” of the current administration. This recommendation comes from the nation’s leading abortion research institute. However, a pro-life activist disagrees, calling it a “serious mistake.”

According to a policy analysis report from the Guttmacher Institute, the benefits of state-mandated abortion reporting no longer justify the risks. The institute warns that anti-abortion policymakers are increasingly using data collection to restrict abortion rights and access, making reporting requirements harmful. They urge policymakers to eliminate existing requirements and resist new ones.

“Political enactment of abortion reporting requirements and their weaponization against patients and providers show that the harms of mandatory data collection now outweigh the benefits,” said researchers from the pro-abortion rights group.

The Guttmacher Institute recommends that instead of abolishing reporting altogether, states should consider implementing voluntary data collection methods.

Pro-life advocates disagree with this recommendation, arguing that accurate abortion data is essential for evaluating the impact of abortion policies. They believe that rolling back reporting requirements would be a mistake.

Abortion data collection primarily comes from states reporting to the CDC. This data provides insight into the number of abortions nationwide and key demographic information. Currently, 46 states and the District of Columbia have some form of mandated abortion reporting.

Proponents of abortion reporting argue that it is crucial for public health and understanding trends in unintended pregnancies and clinical practices. They warn that giving the abortion lobby a monopoly on reporting would obscure the true picture of abortion practices.

In response to Guttmacher’s recommendation, a spokesperson emphasized that ending government-mandated abortion reporting does not oppose the collection of accurate data. They advocate for voluntary data collection models that protect patient and provider safety and privacy.

The Guttmacher report comes in the context of increased abortion restrictions following the overturning of Roe v. Wade and changes in federal abortion funding policies. It highlights the ongoing debate over the role of abortion reporting in policymaking and public health.
