Everything we know about the long-term shoulder injury of Saints’ quarterback Derek Carr

The New Orleans Saints are facing a significant issue with Derek Carr, as the quarterback is currently dealing with a major shoulder injury to his throwing arm, NFL Network reported Friday.

Reportedly considering surgery, Carr might potentially miss the entire 2025 NFL season.

Last season, Carr’s playing time was limited to 10 starts due to oblique and hand injuries. During those 10 games, he accumulated 2,145 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 101.0 passer rating, completing 67.7% of his passes. The team’s record with Carr on the field was 5-5, but they struggled without him, going 0-7 and finishing last in the NFC South.

Carr is currently in the third year of a four-year, $150 million contract with the Saints. Earlier this offseason, his contract was restructured, converting a significant portion of the remaining money into a signing bonus. In his first season with the team (2023), Carr led the Saints to a 9-8 record, throwing for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions.

Looking at the rest of the Saints’ quarterback roster for 2025, Spencer Rattler started six games in 2024, with a 70.4 passer rating in his rookie season, while Jake Haener had one start and appeared in eight games. Taysom Hill, who plays multiple positions, tore his ACL in Week 13 last season.

In terms of external quarterback options, veterans Aaron Rodgers and Carson Wentz are still available in free agency. It is anticipated that Rodgers will sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers or possibly retire.

2025 NFL Draft: Travis Hunter & Tyler Warren in Joel Klatt’s top 10 players

In the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, the Saints hold the No. 9 and 40 picks. With their first-round pick (No. 9), the Saints could potentially select Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders or Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart if available. Possible second-round quarterback options include Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Louisville’s Tyler Shough at No. 40.

Having spent the first nine seasons of his NFL career with the Raiders (2014-22), Carr, aged 34, joined the Saints.
