Meghan Trainor Shares What Skincare Lessons She Will Pass On to Her Sons (and ‘Future Daughters!’)

Growing up in Nantucket, Meghan Trainor knows a thing or two about the importance of sunscreen after getting “burnt as a lobster” on at least one occasion.

And now, the Grammy winner, 31, is teaming with e.l.f. Skin to help spread the word about the importance of applying SPF with the Sunhinged comedy roast special, premiering June 14 at 6 p.m. ET on YouTube, where comedians take jabs at the sun (yep) in a lighthearted way to draw attention to Gen Z’s less-than-stellar sun damage prevention habits.

“I was so nervous,” Trainor tells PEOPLE of her part in the special that includes a bit with her friend, comedian Jon Rudnitsky. “I just wanted to make everyone proud and be funny. But the crowd was so kind and so funny, and it was a very welcoming room and all the comedians did so well. I was like, ‘God, e.l.f. is just so smart.’”

As far as making sunscreen a daily part of her routine, Trainor credits e.l.f. Skin’s Suntouchable collection for making it so easy — especially the All Set for Sun spray with SPF 30.

“You just spray it. It’s just so easy. Spray and go,” she says, adding that she’s sure to spread the love to her entire family.

“I spray everyone,” she continues. “My brothers are such manly men where they’re like, ‘No, I don’t need sunscreen!’ And I go around the whole house and I just spray everybody.”

Trainor says she wants to avoid having her kids, Riley and Barry, “learn the hard way” about the importance of sunscreen, especially after she learned how sun exposure from her childhood impacted her later in life.

“I have sunspots at 31, and I’m like, ‘What’s that from?’ And they’re like, ‘Your childhood.’ And I’m like, ‘Excuse me?’ So I’m still learning and we’re all learning,” she says.

The “Mother” singer also says that she didn’t grow up learning much about skincare or makeup at all. It wasn’t until she saw one of her mother’s friends washing her face that she realized it could be a part of her routine.

“I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’,” she remembers thinking of the discovery. “So as an adult now, I double wash every night. And I think of, like, in high school, I definitely didn’t wash my face. I didn’t know makeup could go in your eyebrows…I missed a bit, but I learned it in my 20s, out here in California, where the sun is always out. So now I am prepared fully for my kids — and for future daughters hopefully — to be like, ‘Listen up honeys, sunscreen every day.’”

In addition to Trainor and Rudnitsky e.l.f. Skin’s “Sunhinged” roast will feature comedians Andrea Jin and Heidi N’ Closet and will be hosted by Marie Faustin.

While giving a sneak peek of what fans can expect from her appearance on the roast, Trainor says she helped Rudnitsky come up with some of his material.

“He talks about how I’m literally aging backwards — I  told him to say that,” she admits.  “I was like, ‘Mention how skincare is so important because Meghan Trainor is aging backwards.’ And then he looks up and he’s like, ‘You’re Meghan Trainor.’ And I’m like, ‘Yep, that’s me’ … It’s really funny and cute, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
