ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) – The far reaches of outer space are coming right here to planet Earth. Specifically, you can now go on a self-guided walk across the solar system in downtown Escanaba.
Today, Delta Astronomical Society members reintroduced the updated Planet Walk to the community.
The 13-plaque walk starts on Ludington Street at City Hall with the Sun. Each full-color sign explains the planet, star or object. And a QR code takes visitors to videos with more information.
“Overall, this project between what we raised ourselves and what you know was donated by businesses and members of the community and the community foundation and all of that, we spent over $5,500 redoing this,” DAS Planet Walk Chair Dan Young said.
The group says it replaced the signs because the old ones were falling apart and the science was outdated.
“We’ve created something, we believe, which is going to be here for another 20 years and really be a positive addition to Ludington Street,” Young said. “It actually gives people something to do while they’re walking through or while they’re shopping in Escanaba.”
Tour brochures are in a box on the Sun post. The walk ends just before Lincoln Street.
