WWE President Nick Khan was the guest on the latest episode of Stephanie McMahon’s podcast, What’s Your Story, and they covered a ton of ground. It’s worth watching the entire thing but I couldn’t help but key on a quote about how the company books its shows (transcription via Wrestling Observer):
“Steph, I promise you this, I’ve never once searched my name on X, on any social media platform, on Google. If it says something positive, it has no relevancy to me. If it says something negative, it has no relevancy to me. I love hearing that Paul says that to you. I know he believes that [ignoring negative comments on social media]. And it’s something we encourage our creative team and writers. Like, don’t program for that. Program for the universe, not for a small portion of the universe who wants to criticize you. That doesn’t matter. Move on, put on a good product, the money will be there, the fans will be there, the results will be there.”
There’s been quite a bit of loud criticism directed at Triple H, the guy who heads up creative and is largely responsible for what you see on WWE television. Khan puts himself right there with him, and encourages anyone with an issue to approach him with their problem so that it will become “our” problem, something any good leader would do.
That, too, was worth pointing out.
I, for one, don’t quite understand the issues some are having with the current product. Is it the most exciting thing on a show-to-show or even week-to-week basis? Certainly not. When you’re telling any good story, though, it can’t be. You have to take the time to set everything up, and you can’t be driven by the whims of the few.
To that end, I quite appreciate these comments.
How do you feel about it?
